They Started It #Persist #SongLyricSunday

Protests are happening. The fight is on. Problem is, I am a lover and not a fighter. Doesn’t mean I don’t get angry.

For freedom of speech and expression and the press. For science. For transparency. For women’s rights. Rights for all peoples.

People are fed up. They are angry. A healthy dose of anger can be a good thing. We must be careful, however, that things don’t get out of hand. In that case, we’d lose our right to be heard.

Sometimes it feels like protests look good, but do not change a thing in the end. Still, the anger persists.

If you feel so empty
So used up, so let down
If you feel so angry
So ripped off so stepped on
You’re not the only one
Refusing to back down
You’re not the only one
So get up
Let’s start a riot, a riot
Let’s start a riot
Let’s start a riot, a riot
Let’s start a riot
If you feel so filthy
So dirty so fucked up
If you feel so walked on
So painful so pissed off
You’re not the only one
Refusing to go down
You’re not the only one
So get up
Let’s start a riot, a riot
Let’s start a riot
Let’s start a riot, a riot
Let’s start a riot
If you feel so empty
So used up, so let down
If you feel so angry
Just get up
Let’s start a riot, a riot
Let’s start a riot
Let’s start a riot, a riot
Let’s start a riot

LYRICS

***

There are consequences for all of us, for our behaviours. We can’t afford to be careless.

Song Lyric Sunday

All of us have good reasons to feel the way we do in today’s world. It’s how we handle ourselves that counts.

I don’t want my anger and my frustration with the things I see going on to make me bitter or to cause me to act badly, as an excuse.

This leaves me wondering just how to proceed.

In the meantime, music helps calm the anger that often threatens to bubble up inside of me.

  1. An absolutely appropriate song for the anger and frustration many of us are experiencing today. For me, anyway, the CONSEQUENCES of January 20th. Thanks for sharing. I hadn’t heard this song before.

  2. We all need angry songs like this with the volume turned up LOUD! Lots of people share your anger, but you’re right, it needs to be channeled constructively if we can work out a way to do that.

  3. Kerry, I apologize if this is a duplicate. My browser crashed and forgot all of my passwords and WP was one of them. Music really is therapeutic, even when it’s helping us to process anger. I’ve found myself backing off a lot on how much news I listen to or read as I feel like I’ve been in a constant state of stress since the election. Maybe if I take in less, I’ll think of more ways to help or to process or something. XO

  4. I absolutely LOVE this song. It seems appropriate for what’s going on today. I saw this band in concert and I’m not sure if they were telling the truth or not (because I’m sure they say certain things to get the crowd going), but apparently they were told by the city we live in that they couldn’t play this song (I live in Utah, which is an ultra-conservative state). He pretty much said screw it and did it anyway. It was amazing!! Thanks so much for sharing!!
